User Review

Has its moments but outside of Sam Raimi's strong directorial efforts and Rachel Weisz's fun and wickedly sassy performance, the movie plays more like a Star Wars prequel.

Rating: 5/10

Mildly entertaining look at the origins of the characters from 'The
Wizard of Oz" has everything down pack. From great visuals to
imaginative set pieces, this film has everything. Its does not have
however a single interesting character outside of the film's main
villain and her good witch sister. Not to mention the fact that its
script is as thin as a sheet of paper and the plot reeks of a Star Wars
prequel but with out the light sabers. Its main hero Oscar Diggs
(Played by James Franco) is not interesting at all and it does not help
matters that Franco is miscast and while Oscar is supposed to be a bit
of a conman with a heart; Franco comes across more as a degenerate
deviant with his performance. While Franco is sputtering out of control
performances wise, it falls on his co-stars to pick up his slack and
one of them is Rachel Weisz, who plays the oldest witch sister Evanora,
who rules Oz with a velvet iron glove. She is manipulative and cunning
and in my mind the best thing about this film. While most of the things
in this film are mostly kids stuff, Weisz infuses her character with a
wickedly sassy seductive charm that elevates this film past most of its
problems. Her showmanship with the material is greatly appreciated,
especially when after a while; you are getting quite annoyed with most
of the characters in this movie, especially the computer generated
ones. Another actor who picks up Franco's slack is Michelle Williams,
who is very charming in a good girl kind of way and is the only actor
in the film who can hold the screen with Weisz performance wise. The
movie could have worked much better if it just had Weisz and Williams
as the leads but unfortunately, its not and we have to suffer though
Franco trying to be charming in a squirmy kind of way and suffer though
probably the movie's worse offense, which is the character of Theodora
played by Mila Kunis, who redefines the word "Miscast". Theodora is
supposed to be innocent in this film and gradually lose her innocence
to become (Spoiler) the iconic "Wicked Witch of the West".
Unfortunately, Mila comes across as interesting as a block of wood in
this film and her transformation towards the climax ends up being more
funny in a very bad sort of way than revealing. It does not help
matters that Mila looks as disinterested in her character as the
audience is and a better actor with more range could have brought more
to it.

All and all, it had its moments but its problems weight it down.

14 year-old Ellis (Tye Sheridan) lives on a makeshift houseboat on the banks of a river in Arkansas with his parents, Mary Lee (Sarah Paulson) and Senior (Ray McKinnon). He sneaks out early one morning to meet his best friend, Neckbone (Jacob Lofland). Neckbone, also 14, lives with his uncle, Galen (Michael Shannon), who makes a hardscrabble living diving for oysters. The two boys set out to an island on the Mississippi River, where Neckbone has discovered an unusual sight-a boat, suspended high in the trees, a remnant of an extreme flood some time in the past. They climb the tree and into the boat only to find fresh bread and fresh footprints. Realizing that they are not the only ones who have discovered the treehouse boat, they decide to leave. When they reach the shore, they find the same footprint in their boat. And that's when they meet Mud (Matthew McConaughey). Mud is a gritty, superstitious character; his clothes are dirty, his tooth is cracked, and he needs help. He tells the…

I saw it in Cannes a few days ago, and what a beautiful and strong
movie!

And what a shame this movie didn't get the Golden Palm!!!

I don't want to spoil this movie, but I can just say it's a rare and
beautiful movie about love, friendship, nature and wildness. Very
sensitive, touching.

The cast is great, Reese Whiterspoon, Matthew McConaughey, and the two
children.

Great photography too, with great shots of the Mississippi (among
others).

I'm looking forward to see Jeff Nichols' next project!

I saw this movie at a sneak preview this afternoon. This was a very
enjoyable movie for our whole family. Me and my husband sat there and
laughed frequently, being completely enthralled with the story and
graphics. Meanwhile, my daughter and my 7 year-old grandson sat with
us, and they also were laughing throughout most of the movie. It has
something for people of all ages to enjoy. It was heartwarming, and at
times, it totally pulls on your heartstrings, too. The characters were
appealing, and the type you find yourself rooting for as time goes by,
and the animals that interact with the humans frequently stole the
show! I know that some critics will have issues with some of the
fantastic creatures that are seen, and they may take issue with the
extraordinary things that The Croods are able to do physically. I knew
going into this movie that this movie was a work of fiction, though,
and therefore I was able to suspend my expectations of reality, and go
on the ride that Dreamworks wanted to take me on. I thoroughly enjoyed
myself, and took this movie for what it was – a lighthearted comedy
about a family going through changes, and how they deal with those
changes. I would definitely recommend this as a great movie to see!!

A memorable sci-fi fantasy world with a human heart at its core.

Rating: 8/10

If there is a soul, it is made from the love we share.

There are many ways to describe Oblivion, but the softly spoken
afterword by Tom Cruise's character really makes you feel the human
heartbeat of this sci-fi epic.

As always, the trailer is full of explosions and set pieces. Oblivion
the movie is an entirely different beast that values a human story and
characters that are driven by common purpose. While the cast is tiny, I
found much to enjoy from Cruise, Riseborough, Freeman and that Nordic
guy from Headhunters who is showing up more frequently in Hollywood
blockbusters. Aside from unusually limited screen-time, Morgan and
other supporting cast are effective and memorable.

The threads of the plot are well-woven and I won't give anything away,
so what I will tell you is to prepare for a powerful journey into the
unknown where nothing is what it seems. Explosive set pieces take a
backseat for sci-fi philosophy with twists to spare.

Oblivion ticks all the boxes for correct use of literary devices and
establishes enough original cannon to stick in your mind long after the
credits start rolling. It is a distinct success among the largely
abysmal offerings of 2013 so far, don't miss it.

You probably think this film is completely focused on the story of
Jackie Robinson. That is definitely not the case, as this film finds
balance between the story of Robinson, baseball, and segregation. And
this film succeeds in depicting all three aspects to bring a powerful,
heartwarming, humorous film. The casting is great. Every actor fits his
or her character perfectly. Harrison Ford does an amazing job
portraying his character with his no- nonsense humorous attitude. He
has a good chance of grabbing an academy award nomination for this
roll. This is one of those movies that takes you for an emotional
thrill ride. You feel for the Robinson. You want him to win. And you
rejoice when he does. So sit back and let the film drag you in; it's
worth your time.

Caught an advanced screening of Pain & Gain in Miami and I must say
this movie is without doubt going to be a huge hit. Absolutely
hysterical and action packed. Marky Mark proves yet again that he is
one of the best action/comedy stars of our time. Before seeing this
movie I was never a fan of Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson or his supposed
"acting" skills but after seeing him play a former criminal and
hilarious born again Christian in this film I have to say I am now a
fan. Go watch this movie and prepare to be laughing hysterically from
beginning to end. The fact that the boneheaded kidnapping plan
portrayed in the film was based on a true story makes this that much
more intriguing. Go watch this movie!

Rating: 8/10

8/10.

I know a lot of the other reviewers will compare this film to the older
one and also the book, so if you're interested in a comparison, stop
reading here. I want to review this film as a movie that tells a story,
like every other film. I don't want to review this as a film that tried
to beat its preceding film adaptation.

I myself have read the book and have always been so intrigued with the
character of Gatsby, and when I heard a few years back that he would be
portrayed on the big screen by DiCaprio, I couldn't wait. The character
carries such a mystery about him that was delivered so excellently by
Leonardo DiCaprio, and made it so fun to watch. It was almost like I
didn't know what the ending was because I was so immersed in 1920s New
York, and in the lifestyle of The Great Gatsby.

The film itself, as a film, was awesome! The visuals and soundtrack
were captivating and lavish. The acting was great overall, as you can
trust these actors to deliver.

The storyline is obviously interesting: A man realizes his new neighbor
is a mysterious, and incredibly wealthy man. Like how awesome is that?
Throughout the whole film, as the relationships between all the few
main characters become deeper and deeper, and the questions become
answered, you just can't help but feel so into the characters' lives.
Great writing for the characters, great directing, great great great
acting.

Overall, this is just a great film. If you go into the theater thinking
"oh this'll suck compared to Robert Redford" or "I bet the book is way
better", you're setting yourself up for a bad 143 minutes. Don't be so
close minded and try to view it as just another film that tells a
fictional story, and a great one at that.

This is my first review and I'm writing it because the critics are all
praising this film so much.

Let me tell you, if you like Iron Man in any way and/or are familiar
with the mythology, do not pay to watch this film. This is a poor
excuse of a plot that outright spits in the face of fans and destroys
one of Marvel's most powerful villains. Seriously, the Mandarin is Tony
Stark's antithesis; their conflict was always the symbol for magic vs.
science. Like Joker's insanity contradicts Batman's great use of logic.
In Iron Man 3 they ruined him so bad only a reboot could save the
character (and believe me, I hate reboots as much as everyone). The
Mandarin is now used as a joke character with the main twist just
playing for laughs (or in my case, tears). This guy should have ten
powerful magical rings that alone could rival the Avengers' powers
combined. Was this "adaptation" really the best thing to do? Magic CAN
be done on the big screen, they've done Norse Gods! Ten Rings are
nothing compared to that…

Other than that, the film still wouldn't be good. Shane Black writes
comedy action films, only this time the comedy is much more cringe
worthy and not really funny, and the action probably sums up about 20%
of the film. The main plot-device for armor malfunctions, power-downs
and or stupid failures is so overused I was wondering how could they
ever fill up 120 minutes without it. The actual Iron Man suit is so
underused that you'll think this is Bourne or Bond you're watching.
Also noteworthy: If a film relies on poop jokes for a quick laugh, it
got as low as it'll ever get.

Also, I must say Rhodes (War Machine) needs a plot arc. He's a tool. I
love Don's work in the role and think he's charismatic (as are RDJ and
Gwyneth), but he needs to have some kind of a story.

Other new characters' besides the Mandarin are really hit and miss.
This series' villains really have become one-note. We all know the bad
guy is the one wearing the fancy suit that wants corporate power and
tries to take over. Special mention goes to Maya, that one person who
changes her mind all the time and leaves the film never having stepped
in in the first place.

Wait, I'm not done yet. There's also a kid "side-kick" and you guessed
it. He's in an hostage scene! Well, that's some good innovative writing
right there! All in all, this is as bad or even worse than X-Men: The
Last Stand. Beware of the actual ending that retcons everything about
Tony's back-story. I don't know how Marvel green-lighted this script, I
really don't! I know any fan could have done it much better!
